photo-30 copyThe Erwert party wrapped up their three-day fishing trip with Captain Phil on Tuesday. The group includes three generations – Bill Sr., Bill Jr., and Kevin. The group has visited Sitka and fished with AU for 20+ years! Kevin’s first trip was when he was eight years old. He now has his own little boy, who he plans to add to the group when he’s old enough.

The group spent most of their days fishing the areas off The Cape with the rest of the charter fleet. Lots of bait has kept large schools of king salmon concentrated to inside structure. Kings are primarily isolated near a contour line that we call The Mushroom. Large schools of herring congregate near this contour and the salmon are gorging on them. Since this bait is so close to rocky structure, rockfish also feed on the bait, which means sometimes anglers must fight through the rockfish to hook a king. The Erwert’s enjoyed many opportunities for catch and release of kings at this spot. We’ve also found silvers near the inside structures, but they have been more reliable in the gravel flat off The Cape.

Each day, the group ventured offshore to a reliable halibut spot of Captain Phil’s in nearly 700 feet of water. The fishing was fast. Less than an hour after baits hit the bottom they were pulling the anchor and heading back in with their limit.

The weather has been beautiful the last few days – sun and flat water. The current is still ripping, which we addressed in yesterday’s blog post. If you know why the ocean is behavior this way, please comment below!

I have a request. I am unable to join the Sauerland party this year due to back surgery. Would it be possible to do a report on their trip, so I can see what I missed? They will be there next weekend.

    Thanks
