Brace Yourself, Kings Are Coming

IMG_0733

With only weeks away from the beginning of our season and Hook It & Cook It, our resident Sitkan captains David and James have been anxiously waiting for nice weather so they could fish on the ocean. Finally, yesterday, after weeks of poor weather, the clouds parted, the temperature rose, and the ocean leveled off – it was a gorgeous April day. A group of anglers including captains David, James, Bryan, and Joe Loranger ventured to Vitskari to try their luck for kings.

After little time metering the area, the found small balls of bait hugging the bottom – a promising time during this time of year. The group broke out their mooching gear and began fishing. Each angler had salmon action. Some had bites, fish on temporarily, and David and James both landed a king. The also caught three halibut. For late April, they were pleased with the action for the day.

It’s an encouraging sign that kings are moving in closer to Sitka. Hopefully in the next week we’ll fish the west side of Kruzof and report back to you.

We still have some great dates in late May and early June – prime time for kings, halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. The good old days are about to begin again in Sitka.
