FullSizeRender-2 copy 4Jim Klaustermeyer returned for his second trip of 2015 bringing Loren Kramer and H.Paul and Dorothy Fountain with him. Jim visited in June for the kings and returned this time to fish for acrobatic silvers.

Every day of the trip, Captain Spencer took the crew north. He mainly fished in Hoonah Sound, where the silver fishing has been reliable. The water is much calmer in the sound, but with a little breeze, the wind creates the perfect speed for long drifts for silvers.

During their four days, a typical day’s catch was 20-plus cohos, 2 kings, halibut, rockfish, and pacific cod. The cohos are getting bigger, with weights creeping into the teens. The kings are smaller than average, but they are easily identifiable once hooked by the longevity and strength of their fight compared to the silvers. During this time of year, bait is abundant inshore, so halibut migrate to these areas for a dependable meal. Fortunately for us, the halibut are congregating around the flats near Emmons.

These anglers, like many others this year, had never fished the area before. They appreciated the comfortable water each day and were amazed by the variety of fish they were able to catch in such a secluded area.

Other groups enjoyed fishing the open ocean on Sunday when the sun came out. Most fished south from areas around the Cape to Beaver Point. Long drifts were effective for silvers and kings and halibut fishing was easily accessible offshore. The ocean calmed for the Sunday, but has since kicked back up, coupled with rain. Fortunately, the forecast for the rest of the week looks beautiful with minimal rain and seas 3-5 feet. It should be wide open for fishing options, so stay tuned to hear where the fleet fishes this weekend.
