sitka fishing reportWith one week to go before we begin our season and Hook It & Cook It, some of the early arriving crew had to test the fishing on a beautiful sunny day in Sitka. A group of captains including David, James, and Eric ventured to Vitskari to try their luck for kings.

After little time metering the area, they located a lot of bait and witnessed humpbacks feeding in the area – a promising sign during this time of year. The group broke out their mooching gear and began fishing. Eric was the only one to catch a king, which chased his bait nearly to the surface like a hungry coho. They caught the lone king when they were fishing above a bait ball they could see from the surface.

Captain Spencer fished on a separate boat where they explored closer to the open ocean. They managed to boat two kings. For a short outing in early May, they were pleased with the action for the day.

It’s an encouraging sign that kings are moving in closer to Sitka. In the next week we’ll fish the west side of Kruzof and report back to you.

We still have some great dates in late May – excellent time for kings, halibut, lingcod, and rockfish. The fishing season is about to begin again in Sitka!
