IMG_3129During the past week, we had clear blue skies and flat seas that turned into windy, rainy, big water then back again. On the beautiful days, fishing was fast and comfortable at the Cape. Then, once stormy weather rolled in, everyone spread out to find their fish.

Before the storm, kings and cohos were abundant at the Cape. Most captains were successful anchoring or drifting and many of our Cape spots produced fish. Once the ocean built, some continued to battle the open ocean to find salmon, while others fish the calmer, inside waters of Vitskari, Biorka, and the Shark Hole. Every spot was holding kings, but it seemed the cohos were more concentrated to the Cape.

When the seas calmed, most groups still managed to get to the halibut grounds to find their flat fish. And, many of the inside areas held plenty of quality rockfish and the occasional keeper lingcod.

It was also another solid week for wildlife. With abundant food off the west side of Kruzof, the humpback numbers seem to be up and the orca occurrences are more common. There was even a sighting of a rare northern fur seal last week that hung around our boat looking for scraps.

As we move into July and anticipate the commercial opener, we will keep you posted on the bite and recap our eventful first half.
