Fishing Report July 8, 2009

The red hot king fishing of June 2009 continued through the last 10 days of the month. Limits with plenty of catch and release action were the rule. Silvers have done a here today, gone tomorrow and back again the next day thing through the first week of July, making my prediction that they were here to stay (last report) a wee bit optimistic. The ocean continues to bloom nicely with large amounts of baitfish present. We expect the mother lode of silvers to show any day.

The biggest king of the season, a whopper 55 pounder, was landed by long time Angling Unlimited friend and client, Bart Nelson on June 21 fishing with Captain Chris Weiland. Fifteen year old Mathew Barr came all the way from Florida to catch a 35 pound king on July 2. He, his father Larry and Uncle Chris enjoyed three days of king limits and good halibut catches fishing July 2-4. The Slegal group landed a limit of kings and silvers on July 5.

Halibut fishing held strong through the month of June and into July with a fair number of bigger fish landed including a 110 pounder landed by Henry Flint on June 21 fishing with yours truly, Captain Tom Ohaus.

June weather was good except a period of stormy activity during the last week. Our anglers were still able to get out to catch kings and halibut, but it was anything but calm. Early July has seen a return to sunshine in Sitka with a persistent but very livable northwest wind on the ocean.

All in all, 2009 continues to shape up as one of the best king salmon seasons for numbers that we’ve seen for a few years. The weather has been great for the most part, including an 80 degree day in Sitka, which is very rare on July 6.

Due to the off economy, we still have some very good openings scattered at prime times during the rest of the season. If the urge hits you, give our office a call.
