60 Feet, 60 Pounds

By June 26, 2010No Comments

With limit of kings aboard, we slipped into a lee shore behind a rocky island in search a slow drift for some black rockfish jigging. We were one black rocker shy of the limit when Trig Winquist’s rod doubled over under the weight of something clearly bigger. As first I thought he’d snagged bottom, but Trig knew better. He worked the fish hard, maximum pressure given the salmon rod and direct drive Shimano Bantom reel Trig favors. Five minutes later, deckhand Tony Foehrenbacher stuck the gaff into a 60 pound halibut, hooked in 60 feet of water. When the fish hit the deck all hell broke loose until we were able to sedate the beast with a few sharp blows to the head and a quick trip to the hold. You  never know what to expect when you drop a line in Sitka waters – good things come to those who fish.
