Big Fish

On Wednesday, Rusty Lyons from Waitsburg, Washington landed the biggest king of the Angling Unlimited season – a whopping 47 pounds. He made multiple trips around the boat before bringing his big smiley to the net. The rest of the group on board landed king limits before heading offshore for halibut limits – which was the rule for much of the AU fleet. On Thursday the salmon bite opened up even more with schools of kings appearing in a number of locations and, again, limits of kings followed by limits of halibut were the rule. Silvers are beginning to show up in fits and starts. On Tuesday, fishing with Jim, Craig, and Dave Messenger, plus Pete Allred, we landed 13 silvers and a limit of kings aboard my boat. The silvers came in rapid fire on our first few drifts, then seemed to scatter into a one here, one there, pattern. Typically the silver numbers build steadily from late June onward. There were lots of whales, lots of krill, and a lot of bait fish on the ocean yesterday – good motivation for  silvers to move inshore. The weather remains unusually cool and wet, but we’ve had little wind for three days and the seas have been calm. The long range forecast suggests more of the same.
