Silvers, Big Halibut, Salmon Sharks

Sorry for the lapse in communications. It’s that time of the season and a little fatigue got in the way of reporting. The silver fishing has been generally very good with a short lapse in the action last week. Since then the catches have been getting better and better with limits or near limits on all boats yesterday. The silvers have shown up in locations ranging from nearly 30 miles south of Sitka to 30 miles north. Our boats have been ranging around looking for them and finding them. The biting periods have been sometimes confined to short chaotic bursts, but when they happen all hell breaks loose. On my boat yesterday, fishing with long time AU customers Paul and Mary Greenwell and new friends Henry and Kathy Fertitta, we had two silvers in the boat at 9 AM and 20 in the boat at 10 AM. On Monday, Captain Phil Carlson, fishing with the Burritt party brought in a 180 pound halibut, the biggest of our season so far. Captain Greg Mohs brought in a 120 pound salmon shark on the same day fishing with the Horton party. We’ve enjoyed four days of the best weather all season, calm seas and sunshine. We continue to see large amounts of bait in many locations and a fair number of whales. The silvers are growing large on all the feed with more and more in the low to mid-teens. King fish, as should be expected, is tapering off to a trickle. It’s the height of silver season and the run continues to be one of the better we’ve seen in the past 5 years.
