Captain Tom recaps the Seattle Show

Last week I spoke four times at the Seattle International Boat Show. The turnout for the first talk on Tuesday was intimate, about a dozen people showed up to hear about Angling Unlimited and fishing in Sitka. The final three talks were all about our method – mooching for salmon and turnout was great – nearly filled the room on Wednesday and filled it on Saturday. The big surprise was the dozen people who showed up for the talk at 3 PM Sunday. Given that the Boat Show closed at 4 PM and the Super Bowl kick off was 3:30 PM, I expected to be talking to myself. The attendees showed a lot of interest in mooching and what we’ve learned from 25 years of guiding on the North Pacific. Lots of questions on everything from what kind of hooks we use, why we use sliding sinkers, how fast to work your bait, why the long G. Loomis rods and the line counter Shimano reels. Despite the fact that downrigger fishing has become the dominant method in the Puget Sound region, many people seem to yearn for something a bit more hands on – they want to hold the rod, feel the bite, and hook the salmon themselves. They want to fish.
