At the risk of sounding repetitive, the 2013 season continues to amaze one and all who fish with Angling Unlimited. On Thursday the silver bite slowed and got a little more scratchy, which meant that some boats had to fish all day for limits and those that went offshore for halibut may have sacrificed the limit. That was the weakest day of silver fishing we’ve seen in nearly a month. The kings remained present and strong with some really nice fish hitting the dock. Anders Engle landed a 45 pounder on Thursday aboard “Albatross” and the Pearson party brought in a 41 pounder on Friday. A fair number of fish in the high 20’s to low 30’s were either released or landed in the past week. On Friday the silver fishing roared back with a vengeance with most boats limited by mid-morning. The only glitch in the fishing has been the offshore halibut show which for some has been good, for others fair, and at times it has been downright slow. On the plus side, we’re landing quite a few good size chicken halibut amidst the white hot salmon bite. All in all, it just couldn’t be better and in the 21 years I’ve fished Sitka, 2013 ranks as the best July for silvers I’ve ever seen. August seems to be ready to follow the lead.
