Sitka Fishing Report 8/7: It Gets Better

By August 7, 2013No Comments

Captain Tom's Fishing Repor FInalI could have written “it doesn’t get any better” for nearly 7 weeks now, but it does. The past two days have featured flat calm seas, sunshine and a salmon bite beyond description. We’ve seen limits of silvers by 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning, lots of kings, and good halibut fishing inshore. The silvers continue to grow  with long time AU friend Mike Clementz landing an 18 pounder today. Kings in the 20’s have been pretty common and fish into the upper 30’s have been landed. We’ve been catching chicken halibut mixed in with the salmon. In fact, for the past two days one of the challenges is getting a bait to the halibut before a salmon gets there first. We’ve hooked silvers on gut bombs, strips of pink salmon and just about anything else you send toward the bottom. Today on my boat, Kathy Owens had a large wad of guts on a circle hook down on the bottom. A silver came along, apparently tried to eat her sinker, became entangled in the line and was brought to the boat without ever being hooked. The crazy thing is this level of activity has been going on for almost 6 weeks with silvers and nearly 8 weeks for kings. So, if you’re worried the good old days are over, fret not, they are here right now.
