Sitka is home to the best saltwater king fishing in the North Pacific. And, we have another year of very generous regulations. If you love to catch kings, don’t miss this season in Sitka!

The 2015 king salmon regulations for Southeast Alaska are now official:

Daily limit: 2 kings per day in May and June. 1 king per day the rest of the season.

Annual limit: 6 kings per year – all season.

Once again, the indicators of the abundance index (AI) were very positive for another favorable regulation. During the winter, Southeast Alaska commercial trollers experienced a historic king catch – reaching their quota in record time. Nearly 80 percent of the catch was caught in Sitka waters.

Another indicator for kings came from the extensive hatchery work from Alaska and British Columbia. As Laine Welch indicated in the Alaska Dispatch News, the hatchery effect on Alaska king fishing is a positive one. Last year, 63 million hatchery salmon were caught in Alaska with 12 percent of those being kings. That total amounts to 1/3 of the total salmon caught in Alaska.

Although the Columbia River fell short of their record forecast on returns, it still saw a million king salmon return to the river. The Columbia is the main river that factors into the AI, so we like to see a quality return to this river every year. Many of these kings will also pay a visit to Sitka sometime during their time in the ocean.

Captains David, James, and Bryan tested the inside waters around Sitka this week and were encouraged by the active waters this early in the year.  This is a great indicator that the salmon forecast is taking form and that our guests will be enjoying the line-screaming action of king fishing in two weeks.

We still have openings to get in on the peak king salmon periods of May and June. Our May dates are also discounted 20% off our regular rates for 2015. If you want to fish Alaska, make it Sitka, where the salmon fishing is the best in the whole state. 2015 is the year you won’t want to miss!
