IMG_0868Our first official group of the year just finished their three-day fishing trip with Captain David and Bryan. Longtime client, Bill Donwen was visiting the Seattle area and couldn’t resist a visit to Sitka since he was so close. Jim Rieder, Jeff Donwen and his wife Angie accompanied Bill on the trip. Everyday during the trip was beautiful – clear skies and sunny with temps in the low 50’s. The wind averaged 10 mph, which wasn’t enough to build the seas, but was enough for proper drifts.

Reports of good king fishing led Captain David and the group to the Cape. He experimented with drifting and anchoring – both proved to be successful. The group mooched all day, everyday of their trip. By mooching, the group was able to target salmon, halibut, and rockfish at the same time. The salmon bite was productive for early May, with the group catching close to a dozen during their trip and most of the fish weighing over 20 pounds. The group caught their limit of halibut everyday. The halibut bite was fast – some days a bait on the bottom guaranteed a bite! Jim also caught a large lingcod in the 50-inch range that they got a great photo with right before its release.

It was a successful early season trip that showed promise for the week to come. What a great way to kick off 2015!
