IMG_1610Stan and Loni Hooley of Wasilla visited Sitka for a few days on business. They decided that since they were here, they might as well do some fishing. The king run hasn’t begun in Southcentral quite yet, so they wanted to get an early start on their kings for the year by fishing Sitka.

The pair went out with Captain James, as well as Captain Bo and new deckhand Jake. They began their day at the Cape, where the bite continued to produce. Since our last report, the Cape has shown even more life. There were small bait balls near the bottom and small schools of salmon that periodically appeared on the sonar. Most of their salmon bites came as a direct result from reeling their herring through the bait. The bites were deep – 150 feet to the bottom. The group landed their limit for the day with Stan boating the largest – a 30-pounder! The halibut were aggressive, too. Once their baits hit the bottom, they had to reel quickly if they wanted to avoid the halibut. They still got their limit of the flatfish.

After the Cape, James stopped at Vitskari, where the group found that reliable spring pacific cod bite, as well as good rockfish action off the edge. The weather was sunny once again with low winds. It was another beautiful May day on the water.

Hook It & Cook It begins Thursday! Seven of our boats will be on the water the next day, so stay tuned for our next report.
