I’m temporarily suspending one of my favorite sayings: “Good luck is a bad fisherman’s estimation of a good fisherman’s work”. Hard work and fishing skills, the hallmarks of all our captains, currently require an usually large portion of luck right now.

To the point, the kings remain in short supply despite good signs of bait, birds and whales. Focusing on high percentage fishing spots with lots of bait, the foundation of finding ocean kings, isn’t paying off a lot better than fishing a blue (as is no signs of life on the sounder) screen. Still, the three of the past four days have shown a bit of improvement in king fishing. The weather has ranged from damp and a little choppy (nothing serious) to sunny and calm. Halibut and rockfish remain dependable targets with a few blackcod sprinkled in. Otters, whales, and a fair number of bear sightings continue to make a day on the salt water wilderness something special.

We’re hoping for a pulse of kings and the first coho to arrive soon. Stay tuned.
