We left the dock last Friday facing a challenging forecast of southeast winds up to 25 mph with gusts to 40. The fishing on Thursday was excellent for silvers and good for halibut, but the locations were all exposed to a southeast wind. After a breezy trip around Cape Edgecumbe, I pointed my boat “Albatross” straight to Shelikof Bay with one thought in mind: If I could find fish anywhere on this forecast, where would I like it to be? The answer – the most protected spot. Shelikof is pretty well protected from the southeast wind, but it hadn’t been producing – until Friday. The first drift got us 3 silvers. The second got us 6 and a king. By 8:30 Albatross had a 24 fish limit of silvers and two kings. The bite slowed some but by the end of the day, our entire fleet had reached limits despite the strong winds. Since Friday, the seas have become nearly flat calm and with the silver fishing remaining strong. We’re getting limits and near limits most days, plus a few kings to spice the action. Halibut fishing continues strong in the usual offshore locations.
