Updates on the 2020 Season: June 8th, 2020

By June 8, 20202 Comments

Our season began on Sunday the 7th of June with 4 boats out. Kings, halibut, rockfish, and a few lingcod made it into the catches. The weather was slightly unsettled – gray, a bit of drizzle and a little bit of lump on the ocean. The bite was spotty but most of the anglers managed to get their king for the day. We found excellent halibut fishing in 270 to 300 feet of water on the open ocean. Today’s forecast is for more clouds but a calmer ocean.

Arrival Information:

We are operating under travel Mandate 10.

What to expect when you arrive:

Two lines form as you enter the airport from your flight:

  • One line is for those of you with documentation of a negative test taken less than 72 hours from when you boarded your flight to Alaska. You provide that documentation and your travel declaration from the state, then enter the main airport to claim luggage, then meet us outside.
  • The second line is for people with documentation of a test taken within 5 days of their flight but no results yet. All those people will be tested at the airport, then enter the main airport, luggage claim. Then meet us outside.

By regulation, AU’s happy greeters cannot be in the airport. You’ll find us in the parking area with an AU sign and a smile.

What Then:

In either case, the mandate requires “minimizing interactions” with the community. That means staying at our lodge, fishing each day, and minimizing interaction with the local population. It’s not a lockdown at the lodge, but it’s not Sitka as usual. There are multiple options for take-out and delivery from local restaurants and we can make sure you get supplied from the supermarket. The standard COVID mantras also apply – hand washing, social distancing, and masks when in public where social distancing isn’t assured. We can go over the details when you arrive.

Testing:

We highly recommend that if at all possible, get a COVID test 72 hours or less before boarding your flight to Sitka and have results in your hand/email/phone. Second best, travel with a test done within 5 days and prepare to test at the airport. Here’s the declaration form to bring along with you on the plane.

We’ve Got You Covered:

If testing isn’t available to you or if it’s inconvenient, Angling Unlimited has an easy solution. We’re working with StrataCLEAR to provide you an at-home self-administered throat swab test that will be sent to you via FedEx with a return label. You take the test at the magic 72-hour mark before boarding and quickly get it to FedEx. Your result will come to you on your phone via a secure link or an App. The cost will be $140.

Contact Carly at 907-747-3736 or Kim at 800-297-3380 for details.

Typically the same day the lab receives the specimen StrataCLEAR is sent the results. As soon as StrataClear receives the results, they will forward them to our client.
