Fishing over the past week continued to have very bright spots, especially at Cape Edgecumbe where quick limits of kings and halibut were the rule. Unfortunately, the weather began to get challenging on a couple of days.

On Memorial Day weekend we got quite a strong southeast blow for two days. The boats that made it to the Cape got king limits in a hurry. The protected waters of Shelikof Bay also produced kings for some boats. The halibut fishing remains strong at the Cape for nice “chicken” halibut. Bigger flatfish have come mainly from deep water forays or as incidental bonuses while fishing for rockfish or salmon near shore.

On June 3, Bob Faine, who has fished with AU for 29 years now, and his fishing friend Max Furer caught halibut of 42 and 47 inches and two nice kings while anchored over a gravel flat with Captain Tom. This was lucky for all because the winds prevented the offshore halibut trip.

As May comes to an end – the summary is good weather most of the time, good king fishing most of the time, good halibut fishing all the time, and some of the best lingcod scores in years.

  • This was my first trip to Alaska. As an 8 year old I dreamed about a fishing trip to the 49th State. 63 years later my son convinced me and we both made our first venture there. One never knows how a fishing trip will go. Weather conditions play a major role. We faced every one of them on our 3 days there. Rain with so so winds, extreme blustery winds with cold conditions that made fishing a challenge and an absolute perfect day with some sun and a light breeze. Captain Sarah was a gem. On all 3 days she did her best to put us in a position to be successful. To her credit she came thru with flying colors. Trip was more than I could have imagined. We caught plenty of fish and had a wonderful time. I highly recommend Angling Unlimited as a choice to plan your trip. From start to finish I was very satisfied and impressed with the process. Entire itinerary from arrival-lodging-fishing-fish processing-fish packaging-departure was flawless. Your only concern is to hook and reel them in. I’m sure all the captains and deck hands are great, but if possible request Captain Sarah and deckhand Pete. Thanks to both of them for making this a fabulous experience, one that I intend to have again! Chris & Christof Lindenmayer

I was on the trip, and it was fantastic. The water was crystal clear, with little surf and little wind. Much better than the majority of San Diego days. (Seas were 12-16 feet last year) The boats and skippers were fantastic, with the skippers putting in extra effort to get us on the fish. PROPS TO THEM. 400lbs. of fillets with 230lbs of halibut. Lots of good eats.
