The Bite Goes On!

We were calculating how much bait AU needed to finish the season last night. The math begins with 10 to 12 dozen herring per boat per day. Why so many? Because there are that many bites out there right now. Between the silvers, chums, pinks, and the occasional king, there’s never a dull moment. All these bites may not end up hooked and all the hooked ones don’t end up in the cooler. Pinks are seldom kept and the chums are beginning to get a little too mature for the best food quality. Whether we keep them or not, the action is constant and the fun is unlimited.

Regarding silvers, we’re continuing to enjoy a strong 2022 run with plenty for our guests to bring home. There is a clear trend toward bigger silvers as we move through August with a few pushing 15 pounds now. We’re still finding some kings each day, with a few very good-sized ones hitting the net. Ernie Peterson, 97 years young and up for his second trip of 2022 with his family, enjoyed watching his son Kris Peterson land a 37-pounder fish with Captain DJ on August 9th. Halibut fishing is super-fast. Ditto that for rockfish – as usual. The weather has given us a break from nearly constant rain in the past few days which is greatly appreciated after a soggy July.
