Captain Tom wrapped up fishing with the Thompson party today after three days of excellent production. During the first two days of the trip, the ocean was flat, which allowed them to explore the western coast of Kruzof for kings. The consistent theme: find a location with bait and you’ll find kings. The fish are hungry and just need a reason to stick around. During those two days, the group also caught their limits of halibut. Halibut have been successful across the fleet, with anglers catching their fish while salmon fishing and when moving off shore to deeper water.
The last day of the trip was the highlight of the king fishing. Spending the entire day fishing inside waters, the group focused their efforts on salmon fishing. They not only caught their limit of kings, but also experienced ample catch and release opportunites. There was also one drift where every angler in the group had a king on at once.
The kings are entering their June peak and the signs point to great weeks ahead – lots of bait, fish at multiple locations, and multi-fish days. The weather has been less than favorable, but thankfully the kings are so abundant that a day of getting pushed off the ocean isn’t lost. Many of the AU boats fish protected waters and catch their limit, while still catching halibut, rockfish, ling cod, and sole. Our guests will be busy in the upcoming weeks with this hot king bite, so stayed tuned for a slideshow sharing all the beautiful fish!
