8 Reasons to Fish in May and June

  1. Hook It and Cook It – This is your last chance to experience Ludger Szamania, executive chef and fish cook extraordinaire. Come for the great May king fishing, gourmet dining, and detailed instruction on how to prepare meals that will dazzle your family and friends with your take-home catch.
  2. Wilderness experience – The waters around Sitka are a saltwater wilderness all season, but the lighter fishing pressure in May along with excellent catch rates make this a special time to enjoy a bit more solitude while catching abundant kings, halibut, rockfish, and lings.
  3. White kings – Our catch of these uniquely rich king salmon is highest during the early season.
  4. Regulations – King salmon regulations are most liberal in May and June.
  5. Blackcod – The offshore grounds produce some of the best blackcod catches of the season. If you haven’t experienced fresh-caught blackcod, you’re in for a rare treat.
  6. Scenery – Snow-covered mountains nearly down to the saltwater give the area a uniquely “alpine” look in May. More than once the snowcapped beauty in May has prompted the question “What’s the altitude here?”
  7. Wildlife – The whales return by May, the albatross and shearwaters abound offshore, and the sea otters raft up inshore. You’ll experience an eco-tour each day of fishing.
  8. Because you can – If a long fishless winter has you champing at the bit, you can break out of the gate first in May. Why wait? Visit for great king fishing, the best king regulations, plus halibut, rockfish, lingcod, blackcod, and whatever else bites.

Available Dates

The data from this winter’s commercial king season off Sitka shows record harvests. Big numbers of kings in the winter correlate with high levels of spring and summer abundance. AU has prime king salmon dates in the second half of May and the beginning of June. We also have excellent dates scattered throughout the season and early September – prime times for jumbo hooknose silvers.
