What an incredible stretch of weather the last few days! Sunday and Monday had clear and sunny skies with near record high temperatures. The ocean was flat with barely a breath of wind, too. There were more shorts and sandals than we’ve ever seen at a tent event.
The Brantigans fished with Captain Tom during their trip and were absolutely on fire with their fishing. Each day they caught limits of kings and halibut – with all the halibut averaging 40 inches. All the kings were between 20-25 pounds. The group caught quick limits by being very efficient on their opportunities and returned to the dock early most days to enjoy the beautiful weather in town.
Woody and Reno Boyd were first time clients last year and we shared their story here. This year, they returned and recruited Tyler, Troy, and David Whitmer to join their trip. Fishing with Captain James, these guys had a memorable trip. Limits of kings and halibut, with several black cod and yellow-eye rockfish mixed in. Since the weather was so nice, they were able to tour all the way around Kruzof. Their last stop on day three was in the Shark Hole where they landed a beautiful king to complete the trip. The group enjoyed their evenings grilling salmon and eating on their deck and capped off their trip at the Channel Club.
The salmon bite is the best at the Cape, with boats drifting when weather allows, but most often they’re anchored. The Cape is a popular spot. Many other lodges fish with us in this big area. Some drift, anchor, or troll. There are more kings around now and a lot of bait to keep them there. Other areas are producing salmon too, but its hard to pass up the reliability and short drive South.
