April 22, 2016Leave a commentThe Captain's BlogBy Captain Tom Ohaus

new crew Magdalena lee
Magdalena Lee

Magdalena calls Los Angeles home and when she’s not travelling, she is attending Otis College of Art and Design. She also likes hiking and lifting at the gym. She has been visiting Sitka and Angling Unlimited as a client with friends and family since 2006. Ever since her first trip, she fell in love with the scenery, the fishing, and the people. Over the years, she’s become friends with the crew. She excited to extend her stay in Sitka this time, so she can take full advantage of the local hiking and making new friends.

new crew john cazort

John Cazort

John was born and raised in Corona del Mar, CA, then studied at the University of Colorado, Boulder where he met Captain Bo. He’s always had a passion for the outdoors with such hobbies like fishing, off-roading, shooting, and surfing. He knows Sitka is the ideal place to work and still enjoy the many benefits of living in Alaska. He can’t wait to hook into some monster salmon this summer!

new crew noel scherer

Noel Scherer

Born and raised in Fargo, ND along with three older sisters, she didn’t stray too far from the nest when she chose to go to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for school. She graduated in 2014 with a double major – a bachelor’s in Kinesiology and a bachelor’s in Rehabilitation of Human Services. She played soccer for UND all 4 years and was named co-captain her senior year. She enjoys anything outdoors – hiking, camping, biking, and snowboarding. She also loves yoga, reading, and writing and if she can be outside, even better. She learned about this position from Eric (Viking). She knew this was an opportunity she didn’t want to slip away. She was attracted to the opportunity at Angling Unlimited because it brings an adventure unlike anything she’s done before! She’s most excited about meeting people, the relationships, and her personal growth during her summer in Alaska.

new crew dave madden

Dave Madden

Dave is from Mantua, New Jersey and he’s currently finishing his freshman year at Rowan College. He’s majoring in civil engineering specifically geared towards land surveying. During his time off, he’s almost always fishing with friends and trying out new spots. His favorite fishing memories were always his annual trips to Minnesota targeting pike and walleye fishing with his family. He heard about this position from his cousin, Captain Cobra (Bryan). After hearing about Bryan’s awesome experience working as both deckhand and captain, he knew it would be the ultimate dream to venture to Sitka to work with him as well as others with a similar passion. He can’t wait to experience some of the best saltwater fishing in the world as well as be surrounded by beautiful scenery.

new crew megan lehto

Megan Lehto

Hailing from Menahga, MN, Megan learned about AU from family and friends who worked with AU in the past. Graduating from high school this spring, she’s making the jump to Alaska. It’s always been a dream of hers to work in Alaska. She lives by the quote, “If you’re dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” She’s anxious to start this big dream and can’t wait for her new life experience and getting out of her comfort zone while trying something different.

new crew brennan skon

Brennan Skon

Brennan is from St. Michael, MN and studies Marketing Communications at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. In his free time, he enjoys exercising, fishing, hunting, and hiking. After hearing about the experience of Sitka and AU from his relatives, he knew that’s where he wanted to spend his summer. He will be the jack-of-all-trades for AU. He’ll help process, deckhand, and even some marketing tasks. He’s excited for a new place and new adventure this summer.

new crew kara jo brigham

Kara Jo Brigham

Kara Jo is from Lewiston, Idaho. She has her Bachelor’s in nursing and have been an RN for two years on the surgical/ortho unit at the hospital in Lewiston. In the fall and winter, she’s been deckhanding on the Clearwater River in search of big B-run steelhead.  In the spring and summer, she’s bass fishing or fly fishing. She loves to be outside – especially with her dog, Grizzly. They hunt, garden, hike, camp, pick berries, travel – basically any adventure outside!

She visited Alaska last summer to fish the Chignik River for kings. She fell in love with the fishing, the quantity and quality of the fish, as well as the tranquility and adventure of Alaska.  Ever since she left, she was ready to go back. After researching possible charter operations, she landed with AU. After what she said, “bugging Chuck enough,” she landed the job! She’s eager to learn new fishing techniques and make new friends. The deckhand in her can’t wait to help clients hook into some awesome fish and see that “fish-on-smile”.

new crew bruno valan

Bruno Valan

Bruno wanted to do something adventurous this summer. While most of his friends will be working in big cities like LA, New York, and San Francisco, he’s going to Alaska. His search began by researching what jobs would be available on fishing boats, and then he learned of this position from Captain Tom’s nephew. He was instantly sold and knew that’s where he wanted to be. Bruno is currently studying biology and global health, and plans to enter pre-med. In his free time, he plays guitar, rugby, scuba dives, and backpacks. He hopes to develop new skillsets catching fish, meet new people and make this summer the greatest adventure of his life.

Danai Kerbaugh

Danai is from Annandale, MN and attends the University of North Dakota where she studies communications and sociology. Her hobbies include golfing, watching hockey, and traveling. She recently studied abroad in France where she got to live in Paris for three months and also travel throughout Europe while learning about new cultures and meeting new people.

She’s visited Alaska in the past where she fell in love with its beauty and once she heard about this job from her dad, she knew this was perfect for her. She’s thrilled to be going back to Alaska and is looking forward to meeting our customers and creating new friendships with the crew.

new crew tom fisher

Tom Fisher

Tom grew up in Grand Forks, ND and has known Captain Eric most of his life. He’s heard about the incredible times and summers full of adventure in Sitka and wanted to be a part of it. With a passion for outdoor hobbies including fishing, rock climbing, camping, hiking, cycling, and snowboarding, he can’t wait to experience the opportunities that come with Alaska. He’s also eager to meet the crew and make new friends. He and his girlfriend recently took 3 months to drive 11,000 miles around the U.S. and camped their way through 11 different national parks and 19 different states.
