King salmon fishing was impacted, but by no means killed, by the July 1 commercial trolling opener. The lights-out action from the end of June has shifted into a little more work. That said, limits remained the rule. Speaking of which, the regulations were changed by emergency order to keep the sport fishery within the allocation. The daily bag limit remains one and the annual nonresident king limit, beginning July 8, drops to one.
Halibut and rockfish remain very strong. The relevant question now is, where are the coho? Thankfully, the answer may be coming – they are showing up. Captain Spencer on Discovery with the Floyd family brought in 13 silvers on July 7.
Not to mention, there’s a lot of life out on the ocean these days – whales, birds, baitfish. That bodes well for a steady invasion of coho (silvers). Fingers crossed.
