Soupfin Shark in Sitka

The first soupfin shark ever brought to the boat by the Angling Unlimited fleet was hooked and released aboard Albatross with Captain Jack McNamee on June 21st, by Chris Miller in the Miller party. It was 5 feet long and somewhere around 40 or 50 pounds. This shark swam a bit north of the normal range for the species. Although not totally unheard of in Southeast Alaska, soupfin sharks are extremely rare. Given their status as anywhere from threatened to endangered, releasing the fish turns out to be the right idea.
