The Mid-July Juggle: Priorities, Patience & Payoff

It’s all about weather and priorities right now. The main mid-July targets are silvers, halibut, and blackcod and each requires a time allocation, especially if the halibut goal is a big one caught under the GAF program.

Starting with blackcod, our guests have enjoyed excellent action in depths of about 1100 feet. This is an offshore fishery that requires relatively calm weather and requires at least 3 to 4 hours of time when you consider getting there, catching them, and getting back.

Coho fishing has been scratchy over the past 4 days. That said, the boats that focus most of their day on them have come in with respectable scores of up to 21 silvers along with a few chums. Nothing is guaranteed with silvers right now. They are here today, gone tomorrow, then back again. There’s a bit of luck involved in being in the right place and there is a time commitment.

Halibut fishing has been good and fast for fish in the under 37-inch size limit. If the target is a big GAF fish, the time factor kicks in again. Rockfish, including the currently open yellowed (One per year), continue to please.

To summarize – currently you might get anything you want, but you might not get everything you want.
