Micah Christenson with his 34 lb King Salmon

How has the king fishing been the past week? It depends on who you ask on any given day. The biting periods seem to be short and often occur on the tide changes. On Monday this week the boats that were in the right place for the early tide change got limits in a hurry. If you picked wrong or got there late – it was a long scratchy day. Which isn’t to say that by the end of the day kings weren’t caught if you missed the early bite, but it took a lot of work and searching. A big 34 pound king was landed on Petrel by Micah Christenson on June 7. Most of the kings are running in the mid to high teens.

Halibut fishing remains about as reliable as sunrise. We’re finding fast action within 5 miles of where we’re salmon fishing. GAF halibut, including a 71 incher caught on June 8 by Lisa Christenson on Petrel, continue to excite our guests. Lingcod numbers seem particularly high this year. Rockfish, as always, make for lots of fast fun.

The weather has continued to be a bit on the chilly side. Thankfully, June 9 dawned sunny and hit the low 60’s. It’s always good to dress in layers and wear one more layer than you think you need. The seas haven’t been flat, but we haven’t experienced any big wind or waves. We advise that guests take medication unless you’re 100% sure that you don’t get seasick, click here for our recommendations.

We’ve seen a couple coho, pinks, and chum salmon. It’s still too early to expect many, but hopefully they’ll arrive early to spice the salmon action.
