A slightly belated Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

The past week delivered a continuation of unusually scratchy king fishing for mid-June which is statistically the peak of the season. The biting windows have been short and spot specific. Unfortunately, the spots are unpredictable. On any given day some boats rack up a decent score while others struggle. All AU captains are very good, but over the past week being lucky has mattered. We’ve seen some wild 4th quarter comebacks for anglers who refuse to quit and get lucky, too.

Halibut fishing remains good, but not wide spread. There is one spot that is getting a lot of attention and delivering results. Rockfish remain abundant but sometimes aren’t quite as willing to bite anything you send down. A well presented jig has been the most productive strategy. According to Captain Chuck, “Lingcod fishing is so good it gets annoying”. Nice way to be annoyed. Blackcod fishing isn’t wide open, but when weather permits decent catches have been coming in from depths down to 1300 feet. Thankfully, AU provides electric reels.

Weather has been all over the board. Most days have been quite fishable but we’ve seen a few days with a nasty NW chop which makes traveling on the ocean a bit uncomfortable and limits how far we range.

This year we’ve opened up the option for guests to share stories at our Pavilion Parties. We’ve heard about some truly memorable moments and exciting times. Ultimately, that’s what fishing AU in Alaska is all about – the memories, the shared experiences, and the comradery.
