Out with the old and in with the new.
The week of July 13 continued with the May/June scenario with king salmon well below seasonal averages and the silvers providing little relief. On Saturday the 18th things appeared to turn around big time with good king catches and solid scores on silvers, but things collapsed back to a slow pick on the 19th and 20th. On Thursday the 23rd the new trend got going with decent catches of kings and silvers. Since then the silvers have become well established with limits hitting the dock by end of week. Kings remained ever possible but sort of randomly picked up in pursuit of silvers. Pink salmon have also arrived in numbers. The weather was rough in the middle of the past week but the ocean settled down for the weekend.
Halibut fishing remains anywhere from hot to fiery – fast limits. Rockfish, including yelloweye, never cease to please. Blackcod fishing has not been reliable. One day last week four boats went to the deep for blackcod. One brought back limits and the others got very few to none. It’s a big investment of time and effort to target blackcod.

The first salmon shark of the season was boated on Aurora with Captain Sarah by Roxanne Olson on July 21. It was hooked on a halibut jig on the bottom in 500 feet fish of water. It put up a big fight going under the anchor line and wrapping up the other halibut lines. It measured over six feet. Salmon shark are good to eat with the steaks similar to swordfish.
We expect the silvers to continue through the end of the season in September along with the possibility of catching some kings in the mix. Happy days.
