The king run 2010 continues to provide nearly monotonous consistency – the kind we all love. Large volumes of baitfish in many of our better known locations are drawing big schools of kings for both the experienced and inexperienced angler. Most kings are running from 18 to 25 pounds. Yesterday (June 21) large schools of herring came up on the surface with kings crashing them on top – if only someone had a fly rod ready. Angling Unlimited’s challenge still holds – first person to catch a king on a fly under IGFA rules (no cheating with bait strips and other sundry tactics) will get a free trip. Weather has turned a bit grey and cool, even for Sitka in June, but it hasn’t stopped the AU fleet from catching king limits most days and halibut limits for those who put in the time. A few coho, chum, and pink salmon have begun showing. It’s still a wee bit early, but were hoping those runs get going soon.
Can’t begin to tell you how much I miss those annual Sitka fishing trips with AU. Saw Roy Tuschoff in QFC the other day and he is probably up there fishing now or, if not, will be in a few days. Lucky guy!!
Paul i will see you on July 13. Save some bib King for me.
