Well, let me first start off by saying WOW!! It truly was an amazing experience. I can’t stop talking about it now that we’re back home and how it brought back fond childhood memories from growing up in the PACNORWEST fishing.
I have not been out on a boat fishing for salmon and bottom fish for over 25 years. It took me the first day to get reacclimated and then BAMN – fish on! It’s kind of like riding a bicycle, you never forget no matter how long it’s been, it just comes back naturally.
A big shoutout to Capt. Sarah and Deck Hand George. These two were responsible for allowing us to bring home approximately 225 lbs. of fresh fish – yum!
Capt. Sarah is a true mariner in all regards. She gave us a great safety brief on day 1 prior to departure, knew all the best fishing techniques, skilled at boat handling, safe navigation, fishing rules and regs, and most importantly finding fish. I completely felt safe knowing she was at the helm.
Deckhand George, I was so amazed at how thorough and diligent he was. He reminds me a lot of myself when I was in my 20’s as a deck seaman then Boatswains Mate in the Navy – hard #$s worker, never complained, always professional, and was constantly on the move and did not hesitate.
Between Sarah and George, they make a great crew and work excellent together. Because of their synergy, it maximized our fishing time without any delays. For example, Sarah would get really excited when salmon showed up on the fish finder and would let us know the depth and range and inform us to get our gear down expeditiously. George, hearing this, also gets excited and would be standing by with fistfuls of herring to rebait anyone’s hook to ensure no missed opportunities. Another example, when we transitioned from in shore salmon to deep water halibut, the transit time was approximate 30 min. During this time, George wasted no time and quickly stowed all the salmon gear, baits, poles, cleared the deck, and broke out all the halibut gear and baited all the rigs. Once this was complete, we had arrived at the halibut grounds. He then transitioned quickly to the bow to ready the anchor. It’s perfectly timed so that once we anchored, all poles were ready to go with no downtime. We did this every day, it was the same routine, like clockwork. Almost forgot, lunches on the boat were spectacular. Sarah and George tag-teamed this effort and alternated each day. George has a unique way of making a half sandwich, I never thought of this, but he would use one slice of bread and fold it over like a taco instead of making a whole sandwich and cutting it in half – ingenious!
The care that goes into our catch is outstanding. Sarah knows the fishing rules and regs by memory, she doesn’t cut corners, if the fish is over or under size even by a quarter of an inch, painfully it goes back. George on the other hand is like Fruit Ninja or Edward Scissor Hands (hope you get these references). Over the five days of fishing, we caught and retained a combined, 12 Kings, three Chums, 40 Black Rockfish, 20 Halibut, and three Ling’s (missed limit by one). While transiting back to port, George was hard at work on the fantail regardless of the continuous pounding of waves, salt spray, wind, and rain against his face (losing two hats overboard) cleaning our fish. George is very systematic, he does the rockfish first, then the halibut and cheeks. Each day on the way back to port, he cleaned eight rockfish and four halibut placing the fillets in its own container and on ice before we made port (that’s a lot of fish). The salmon and lings were cleaned at the dock after we had returned. What amazes me the most, this is George’s first year with the company as a green horn deck hand with no prior experience in this fishery. He filleted all the fish with great concentration, skill, and precision. I would sit back aft with him and watch him every day clean our catch, marveling over his work.
Tess made sure we were well taken care of while on land. Our accommodations were always clean and restocked. Tess greeted us at the airport once we arrived and shuttled us to our accommodations. Once at our accommodations, she briefed us and explained what we needed to know. She did a fantastic job looking after us and kept our place tidy and clean. I really appreciated the coffee maker. It was ready to go in the mornings with just a push of a button – no work required. The cookies were amazing too. So good in fact, Jenn has already baked a few batches of our favorites from the recipe book.
Also, a huge shout out to all the other staff that we did not have frequent contact with but knew contributed in ways to make our trip enjoyable, it was a team effort. Lastly, a big thanks to Chuck for making all this possible. It truly was an experience of a lifetime, something that will never be forgotten only missed, and am already looking forward to next season.
Thank you Angling Unlimited!!
