Springtime in Sitka has felt a bit like October this year. We’ve seen more than our share of rain, wind, and cold. Though hardly the weather our guests, captains, and crew hope for, we’ve seen exciting catches in protected inside waters. This spring has delivered better king fishing on inside spots than we’ve seen in a while including a 33 pounder landed on Captain Chuck’s boat and a number of fish in the mid to high 20’s. Lingcod catches have been decent on the protected water. A handful of GAF halibut, including a 100 pounder landed by Mark, were landed on flat calm water on days when the ocean was too cranky. Blackcod harvests suffer from rough water given that it’s a long run out on open ocean and very deep water. One of our boats got out on Monday and landed half limits. We are looking at a good stretch of weather starting on Tuesday the 10th. Sitka seems to have two seasons. Winter: cold, rainy, and wet. Summer: calm and far less wet. We’re hoping the corner has turned toward summer.
